Indonesia: From Climate Vulnerability to Global Climate Investment Hub

TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – At a high-level panel discussion of Climate Week NYC 2025, Hashim S. Djojohadikusumo, Special Envoy of the President of the Republic of Indonesia for Climate and Energy, underlined Indonesia’s strong commitment to transforming the perils of climate change into opportunities for sustainable growth and global collaboration.

With over 285 million people living in one of the most climate-vulnerable regions in the world, Indonesia faces rising sea levels, unpredictable rainfall, and devastating forest fires. For the country, climate change is not a future risk but a daily reality, and leadership means facing this challenge head-on.

Indonesia has pledged to achieve net zero emissions by 2060 or sooner, pursuing a green economy strategy that simultaneously drives growth, creates jobs, and reduces emissions. The energy transition is urgent and complex, but Indonesia is committed to a gradual, just, and orderly coal phase-down, supported by international financing through the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) to accelerate renewable energy development and strengthen national grids.

At the same time, Indonesia is determined to transform its natural resources from vulnerability into strength. The government is preparing a 12-million-hectare reforestation program with multi-species planting, including fruit trees to restore biodiversity and wildlife habitats. A national carbon exchange is also being advanced, turning nature-based assets into market value and opening new pathways for international cooperation.

Concrete initiatives underway include a 103-gigawatt electrification program with 75 percent powered by renewable energy, regulatory reforms to enable voluntary carbon markets, large-scale carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS), and blue carbon solutions, among others through seaweed ecosystems.

“Indonesia is ready to lead, ready to partner, and ready to invest in solutions. The fight against climate change is not only our responsibility, but also our opportunity to create prosperity for our people and contribute to the world,” Hashim stated. (*)
